Aerobics & Fitness Association of America 
 
Established by Linda Pfeffer RN, AFAA is celebrating its 27th year as a fitness certifying organization. It is the largest fitness educator, hosting more than 2,500 fitness continuing education seminars across the country each year as well as offering many seminars internationally, which are open to all certified fitness professionals. 
AFAA is a National Board of Fitness Examiners (NBFE) affiliate and is currently awaiting some of the highest accreditation available, from the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U. S. Dept. of Education.
AFAA was one of the first organizations to require practical education as well as classroom and that a practical exam in addition to a written exam be passed before certification was issued. AFAA offers certification not only for Personal Fitness Training, but for Group Exercise Instructor, STEP Aerobics, Kick Boxing and Yoga.
To maintain certification and their level of fitness knowledge, AFAA certified professionals must attend continuing education seminars every year which include practical, hands-on education.

Many make excuses about not having money or time for fitness and wellness services...Many go to restaurants multiple times every week, go on vacations and weekend trips...their priority is their next entertainment venue, their vices and image purchases. The results?...

  • The U.S. Surgeon General reports that over 65% of Americans are overweight and 31% are obese.

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that childhood obesity is an epidemic.

  • Dr. Thomas Frieden, Director, Centers for Disease Control: “Obesity and diabetes are the only major health problem that are getting worse…and they’re getting worse rapidly.”

  • The UCLA RAND Center found that obesity raises a person’s health care costs by 36% and medication costs by 77% and they have 30% - 50% more chronic health problems.

  • The Centers for Disease Control report that more than 300,000 people die each year from illnesses caused by or made worse by obesity.

  • According to the American Diabetes Association obesity and sedentary lifestyles are the primary cause of type II diabetes which now affects over 7% of the population.

  • Federal projections estimate that by 2050 close to 1/3 of the population will have type II diabetes, with all its complications in tow, such as blindness, hearing loss, kidney disease, nervous system disorders and amputations of extremities.

  • The World Health Organization reports that over 72% of all deaths in U.S. are the result of lifestyle-related heart disease, lung disease, diabetes & degenerative diseases, citing that such chronic conditions are preventable for the most part and are primarily resulting from unhealthy practices, concluding that the very expensive U.S. drug-based system is not reducing the rate at which conditions become chronic and continue to plague the U.S.

  • The U S Surgeon General reports that approximately 45% of US adults use tobacco regularly

  • The CDC cites that almost half of teens age 13 - 19 smoke.

  • The CDC indicates that less than 10% of the U.S. population exercises for 60 minutes or more 3 times week.

You spend and spend and spend on entertainment venues, vices and propping up your image. You laud and worship sports, Hollywood and music stars while ignoring and even abusing your health, and, at the same time cursing health care practitioners' fees....Complain about the cost of a visit to the doctor, yet drop the cost of a sporting, music or theater event or going out to a restaurant with excitement! Well the next time you, your significant other or child gets a serious or life-threatening illness or inury, why don't you call your favorite sports or Hollywood or music star you praise so highly, worship and so willingly pay, to treat and save you or your loved one? Did you know that the average physician in the U.S. has an annual income of less than 25% of the highest paid sports, Hollywood or music celebrities?

What would be the effects if all health care workers nationally were to stage a one week walk-out, not do a single thing; not even write or fill a prescription? It's not too hard to understand just how warped and perverted our values and priorities have become!

Yes, it is your right to choose how you live. Look at those statistics. You can choose to make an effort at renovating your health or even having the courage and conviction of joining the mere 10% of us who put being "Fit, Trim, Healthy for Life" as a Lifestyle Priority. Or, you can continue on with a lifestyle that gambles with your health and very life!...And you're worried about your image?...Leading lifestyles that blatantly show and portray someone who is not self-respecting of and who has little regard for their own health....It shows with the unhealthy habits and lifestyles priorities you choose. The bottom line is, if you don't care about your health, why should any doctor or health care professional?
